Some Popular Vlogs in light of Google Reader Feed Subscriptions

Today there has been a competitive wave rippling through the blogosphere: bloggers were checking the A-list blogs’ actual popularity through the number of Google Reader subscribers, plus their own. Knowing the top 100 is always interesting for some. TechCrunch has eventually come up with a flexible negotiable solution by using a Google spreadsheet on the top trendy blogs, which is easier to edit and update.

Basically, there are three big conclusions.

First, this is a typical comment-hunting topic and a quick meme (yes, I am also part of it). Who is in the hall of fame and who has been left out? Seth Godin has happened to be missing from TechCrunch’s list, just like Rocketboom, which is the single most famous vlog still in the history of vlogging. The difference is that Seth as a professional marketing guru will complain in a comment (immediately), while Rocketboom won’t.

Second, many data chunks need to be reconciled to get better results, which will differ. Plus many forget that it is not the full readership, only some indication of the volume.

Third, thousands of blogs are popular without having web savvy users, i.e. users who have not discovered the power of using Google Reader for quick news updates. Marshall Kirkpatrick illustrates this idea by comparing a typical culinary blog wiht a technology oriented blog:

Elise Baur’s Simply Recipes, http://www.elise.com/recipes/ , has 2800+ in Google Reader, interesting in light of her total of 235k subscribers. So 20% of TC’s [TechCrunch] subscribers are using Google Reader and 1% of Elise’s are.

That being said, let’s see some of the popular video blogs. It was a pain to add Scoble to the list.

The truth is that I still do not grow attached to Rocketboom for some reason. Dry? Not good at responding to readers? Doesn’t have a real profile? I really don’t know. What I do know is that Wallstrip, on the other hand, has been increasingly winning me over. A great professional blog with original content and fun. I just love the post-it episode (strong inspiration from the film poster of Office Space). If you haven’t seen it yet, check it out here.

Which of the vlogs would you highlight? This is Wired’s old list. Old.
