Unwrapping the XO Laptop Box & Discovering the Apps
The new XO Laptop in the Give 1 Get 1 program arrived yesterday (Dec 18) and we started to unwrap it (it would be great to see how kids are opening the laptop box in a developing nation - not in a classroom setting necessarily).
So here’s our monkey reaction:
The XO laptop box contents:
- 1 green and white XO Laptop
- 1 battery
- 1 cord
- 1 manual (2 pages: getting started and safety instructions - all illustrated with pics)
- 1 welcome letter form the founder and CEO of One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) program, Nicholas Negroponte
We did not have a look at the instructions, trying to figure out things for ourselves. Before the actual riddle started the tiny laptop asked for a name. We have agreed on Boo after a few minutes (started with Gollum, but did not find it a good kiddy long-term name). Then we chose a color for the XO figure in the middle of the screen representing the user/ owner of the notebook. OK, it is green. Then click forward. Had a look at the applications at the bottom, and decided to browse first.
The browser on XO immediately showed up with a Google search box, and we hit a search term, then got a page not found. So we tried to get some wireless connection out of thin air. Our apt has wifi (closed), so we had to find the wifi connections. That took some seconds to conjure up. In fact, it is one button that immediately takes you there, the one in the upper left hand corner, just next to the magnifying glass and over the key number 2 (it looks like a ball with several dots, i.e. like an old telephone dialler).
To be continued.
