Refined Mashup Results in Google Search: What’s Previous Query Guessing?

Google is planning to realize a major change in search results. You may already be using your web search history with your gmail or you may not, but this change will be pretty visible, for some searches great for other searches dumb and misleading. Here’s why you can expect to raise your eyebrows.

Previous Query refinement is now coming to unpaid or “organic” search results” said Marissa Meyer (Google) at the Australian Search Marketing Expo in Sydney.

But what”s the definition of Previous Query? It’s basically a search snippet mashup:

For example, if someone were to search for [spain] and then [travel] after that, BOTH the ads and the organic results will be altered to take the previous query into account. To some degree, it will be as if the second query was for [spain travel].

(so far, it has only been tested in Google AdWords paid search results)

Needless to say, this major move will also affect any searches related to ‘video’ in one way or another, including all the video search engines and video social networking sites (from YouTube through Revver, Daily Motion, etc. to Metacafe) that are currently indexed by Google and mixed in the universal search results.

For instance, [Monty Python] followed by the search for [funny videos] may result in [Monty Python videos], which is not bad. But [local plumber] and [funny videos] may not be ideally [plumber videos]…
